What is it?
Without a governing body overseeing the category, different rum producers have their own rules and regulations about how it is made – but the one thing we can agree on is that it is the spirit distilled from the fermented sugars derived from the fresh juice or molasses extracted from the sugar cane plant.
Rum is produced primarily in countries where the climate is conducive to growing cane sugar, with more than 80 per cent of the world’s rum is produced rum in the Caribbean and Latin America, but it is now also distilled everywhere from Australia to Thailand…and even Scotland.
